Through a blog surf/pinterest item this week, I stumbled upon a new site called teachmama ( I added a link in my sidebar). This gal, along with a couple of others, created a learning calendar, and a challenge facebook group! The stuff they have published is great! I believe they are all mamas to preschoolers, but totally adaptable to every level! This week the activities were about "me on the map"- so I joined it with our Kid Scoop about Greenland, and had the kids do the Greenland packet, look up Greenland on YouTube (we watched movies that showed photos, we listened to the language, heard some music, saw some throat singing and some drum dancing). We also looked up how far Greenland is from Alaska, because the native people are called Inuits in both places- as far as we could tell.
I was amazed at the areas that were populated (not in the above video, but it does illustrate that there are 'regular' school gyms- like we'd have in the states)-in my imagination, I thought it was more like antarctica, just ice. Learn something new all the time! ;)
this was what the kids really liked. Watch their throats move- amazing!
We also mapped our house- Beth did it traditionally, Matt did it Pirate style
I used the old "inside of a brown bag" trick to make them a bit bigger and free, since I am low on construction paper right now. Maps are supposed to look like this anyway- right?
Today's activity is to write and illustrate a story about yourself....Matt said he was already writing a book, so he wasn't doing it....we'll see. Beth probably will. I am also thinking of having them map the upcoming 4th of July parade route. We'll see what other fun is on tap for the day ;) I have quite a bit of time on our hands for the next 3 days - so I will come up with some stuff for sure!
Nothing like a brown bag pirate map! Thanks for linking up and sharing this with the Smart Summer Challenge!
Fondly,

YouTube is such a good social studies research tool. Fascinating stuff! By the way, if you look-up Inuit on Wikipedia it explains the relationship between the indigenous people's of Alaska and Greenland!
I also love that you reused the grocery bags--perfect map paper!
